Our Treatment Strategies
Enhancing Speech Clarity
We provide comprehensive, individualized treatment to help children improve the clarity of their speech sounds. Our evidence-based approach focuses on targeted speech sounds through exercises using visual/verbal cues and gestures. Our therapy includes engaging task-oriented activities that integrate sensory, academic, and movement tasks. We collaborate closely with families to support progress at home, ensuring a consistent and supportive environment for speech development.
Enhancing Early Literacy
Phonological awareness involves recognizing and working with sounds in spoken language, such as words and syllables. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. These skills are crucial for developing reading and spelling abilities, as they involve hearing, identifying, and working with the smallest units of sound in language. Our therapy incorporates narratives, rhymes and activities that manipulate sounds, syllables, and words into their individual elements.
Developing Language Abilities
We support children in developing their language skills, including vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension by using a variety of engaging and interactive methods. These activities may include narratives, storytelling, visual/verbal cues and more. All of our therapy includes engaging task-oriented activities that integrate sensory, academic, and movement tasks. We collaborate closely with families to support progress at home, ensuring a consistent and supportive environment for language development.
Improving Attention, Cognitive Flexibility & Working Memory Skills
Executive function skills are mental processes that help individuals plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. Key skills include working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. We help children build these skills through task-oriented activities (identifying a problem, making a plan, taking action, and checking for completion), which enhance task completion, routine management, and attention.
Incorporating Movement Activities
We incorporate movement into speech therapy because it is crucial for speech development. Movement strengthens neural pathways controlling speech muscles, improves breath control, provides sensory feedback for body awareness, stimulates brain areas, and encourages social interaction.
Utilizing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is a valuable tool in speech therapy for individuals who have difficulty with verbal communication. We use AAC to help children with varying levels of verbal communication express their wants, needs, and comments effectively. AAC includes low-tech options like picture boards, communication cards, and PECS, which use pictures or symbols to convey messages. High-tech AAC involves speech-generating devices and apps on tablets or smartphones that facilitate communication through touch screens and text-to-speech capabilities. Each type is chosen based on individual communication needs, abilities, and preferences for effective communication support.
Integrating Sensory Processing into Therapy
We help children with sensory processing challenges by incorporating sensory-based activities into therapy. Sensory therapy supports speech & language therapy by regulating sensory input, improving motor skills, enhancing sensory awareness, providing sensory feedback, encouraging social interaction, and supporting self-regulation. This holistic approach creates a foundation that enhances the effectiveness of speech therapy, helping children develop better communication skills.
Introduction to Academic Vocabulary & Concepts
We add academic vocabulary and concepts into speech therapy supports students' language development and academic success. Our approach includes incorporating scientific terms, mathematical concepts, and enhancing writing skills into therapy lessons whenever possible. By doing so, we ensure that our sessions not only improve speech and language abilities but also reinforce important academic knowledge, helping students thrive both in therapy and in their educational pursuits.
